Alternative Proposals
Importantly, if space for a supermarket or additional fast food outlets were truly required, there are better-suited locations nearby. Broad Piece (Tesco/Wickes), the Riverside Industrial Estate, or other commercial areas offer improved road access and separation from homes—minimising negative local impact.
We believe this site could serve the community better through alternative development that complements local needs and infrastructure.
What We Would Support
- Residential-led use of the site to help meet local housing needs
- Commercial spaces for small businesses, local services or offices aligned to weekday working hours
- Job and training space to support skills and employment growth
- Flexible space for health, wellbeing or family-friendly uses
- Low-traffic or shared commercial use that reduces congestion risks
Why This Matters
The surrounding area is already residential, and includes primary schools, family housing, and recreational routes. While there are local green spaces, sports clubs and youth services, this site could offer a better daytime commercial balance than two drive-thru fast food outlets or a supermarket.
We're not opposed to development, but we believe it should be low-impact, accessible, and truly needed — not just another generic roadside setup.
What We'd Like to See
We invite Arun District Council and the site owner to explore alternative options that deliver long-term community value and align with broader sustainability goals.
